What is a Tongue Tie?

Tongue ties (and lip ties) occur when tight tissue under the tongue or upper lip restricts movement. This can affect feeding, breathing, posture, and even development.
Some early signs include:
-
Difficulty latching or staying latched
-
Clicking, gulping, or leaking milk while feeding
-
Reflux, gas, or excessive fussiness
-
Frustration at the breast or bottle
- Hard to keep a paci in their mouth
Later on, you might notice:
-
Challenges with transitioning to solids
-
Gagging or choking frequently
-
Mouth always open at rest or snoring sounds during sleep
Tongue ties aren’t just about the mouth—they affect the whole body. A restricted tongue impacts how babies use their core, how they breathe, and how their nervous system responds to the world. If your baby has a tie, therapy can help support bodywork, oral motor skills, and feeding both before and after a release.
