Does My Baby Need Therapy? How to Know When to Get Help

As a parent, you know your baby best. You notice the little things—the way they move, feed, or settle—and when something feels “off,” it’s natural to wonder if they might need some extra support.

Here’s the truth: your instincts matter.
If you’re feeling unsure or your gut is telling you to ask questions, that’s reason enough to check in. Early support can make a big difference in how your baby moves, plays, and connects with the world.

🍼 Signs Your Baby May Benefit from Therapy

Every baby develops on their own timeline, but there are certain patterns that may be worth looking into. You might notice your baby:

  • Has delays in movement, such as not rolling by 6 months, not sitting by 8 months, or not crawling by 10+ months

  • Struggles with feeding, including latching, coordinating sucking and swallowing, or transitioning to solids

  • Shows tension in the body, appearing very stiff, rigid, or conversely, very floppy and low-tone

  • Has flat spots on the head or consistently prefers to turn or look one direction

  • Experiences difficulty calming, sleeping, or tolerating different positions (like tummy time or being on their back)

Sometimes, these signs are subtle—but even small challenges can affect how your baby explores, interacts, and meets milestones.

🌱 What Early Intervention Really Means

“Early intervention” simply means helping your baby build strong foundations before bigger delays appear.
Therapy at this stage isn’t about “fixing” your baby—it’s about supporting their natural development and helping both you and your baby feel more confident and connected.

At Milestones Therapy & Wellness, early intervention may include:

  • Gentle movement and play-based therapy to encourage strength, flexibility, and coordination

  • Parent coaching to teach positioning, play, and daily routines that support progress at home

  • Feeding support for babies who struggle with latching, bottle feeding, or solids

  • Guidance for torticollis or flat head shaping, with exercises and positioning to promote symmetry

  • Sensory regulation strategies to help babies feel calm and comfortable in their environment

Our approach is family-centered—we partner with you to understand what’s going on, create a plan that fits your baby’s unique needs, and celebrate every small step along the way.

💡 You Don’t Need to Wait for a Referral

Many parents think they have to wait for their pediatrician to recommend therapy—but you don’t. You can reach out directly to a pediatric physical therapist for an evaluation.

Early support is most effective when we start before major delays set in, and a short series of visits can often give you the tools, confidence, and clarity you need to help your baby thrive.
